Colts Patriots

Ugh. It's only Wednesday. I don't want to listen to sports talk or read sports media cover this anymore. I will of course watch and read much more. I'm sick of the Patriots. I will not even attempt to hide my disdain. I'm sick of the genius talk. I'm sick of the golden boy. I'm sick of the dynasty. I want the Patriots to lose. I want them to look bad doing it. I want a response from them like the Pistons response to losing to the Bulls in 1991.

I'm excited and scared of this game all at the same time. I'm ready for the Colts to win and take their place among the greats. I'm also scared. The stinking Patriots. I hate the Patriots. I'm scared of what will happen if the Colts lose. I may cry. I may have to give up sports media forever. I may have to drive 2 hours to find a White Castle. Hey that's tempting if they win too.

I think that's enough from me right now.

Go Patriots!

Ha ha. Nice to hear from you Chris Webber. Glad to hear you're still hanging out with your etiquette coach Belicheck. I hear you and Sheed are bringing a new offense to the Pistons. It's called "puff, pass, puff, pass".

Are you sure there's only one puff before each pass?

Seriously, I understand your weariness of the Patriots hype. But if we're going to be fair, we have to acknowledge that it would be understandable to be equally tired of Manning, his (regular-season) stat hype, and his endless commercial work.

I'm not overly concerned with the outcome of this game (I want the NFC to win the SB anyway -- I'd prefer the Bears), and I'm not too excited about the prospect of adding to the Brady/Belichick hype; I just want to make sure it's noted that Manning hasn't been free of hype and overexposure, either.

I think there's a difference between the Manning hype and the Pats hype. With Manning you are talking about overexposure. With the Patriots you are looking at a sports media that adores them. We're talking man crush here. How many times did you hear this week about Brady coming through in the clutch? He threw 3 INTs and one towards the end of the game that should've ended things! Have you ever watched the NFL draft? The guys there endlessly call Belichick a genius even when he drafts guys they've never heard of.
Manning is criticized all the time by the sports media. The Pats are only criticized if Bill refuses to shake a guys hand or the sweatshirt looks especially bad. I'll readily admit that Manning is overexposed (even though his commercials are pretty funny). But his hype and overexposure are totally different than the man love of the sports media for the Patriots. I'll also admit that this thing looks a ton different unless you are all the way into the NFL. I read multiple articles a day from an east coast biased sports media. I watch NFL matchup, NFL network, NFL Live,
Around the Horn, PTI... I know I'm a loser. But I just don't watch much besides sports on t.v.

To some extent, though, I can understand some of the Pats hype. As irritating as it may be (and it is!), they have won three recent Super Bowls. I don't think that's irrelevant. I do think they're hyped far too much, but in a way, that's the media's job. It's what they do. And they do it because the Pats, like them or not, have had loads of recent success. As long as they're in the mix, they're going to keep being hyped as major successes. If/when Manning gets a Super Bowl, he'll likely get plenty of hype (like he did his first few stat-rich years).

Also, I do think you're overwhelmed by it largely because you read and watch so much (not to say it's bad; I think it's good for me that we don't have cable at home!). Like I said, it's the media's job to hype something. The more you watch and read, the bigger that hype gets.

Honest question: do you think it grates on you a bit more because it's often at the expense of your team? It doesn't get on my nerves as much, perhaps partly because I don't have loyalties to either team.

Hey I've got an idea. Call in sick to work and come watch it on my big screen with the rest of the family.

I know my being a Colts fan fuels my hatred of the Patriots. However, I think what really bugs me about the hype is the focus on Belichick and Brady. It also bugs me when they focus too much on Manning. The Patriots had a great defense and a Half of Fame kicker. That made them a really tough team to beat. But it's always Brady and Belichick. All the talk about them being able to win plugging anyone into their system is bogus. They've had some pretty good players. Manning has 2 great receivers, a pretty good offensive line, there's some decent defensive players now, and has had some pretty good running backs. This game Sunday is much more than a 3 person game.
